Our Doctor – Dr. Cox

drcoxDr. Cox grew up in Greenville, attending Rose High School and is proud to have been an ECU Pirate. After graduating from the UNC School of Dentistry in Chapel Hill, he served his country as a Dental officer in the United States Army in Germany. Upon his return to the USA he joined the faculty at UNC School of Dentistry and taught there for three years.  He was then accepted for advanced studies in Orthodontics by the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in San Francisco, California.  There he received his Graduate Degree in Orthodontics.  He has passed the Dental Board Exams in California, Washington State and the State of North Carolina.  He was also awarded a license to practice orthodontics in Germany.

Following graduation, Dr. Cox was asked to join a private orthodontic practice in Germany with an International staff and patient family. The following year he opened his own practice in Landstuhl, near Ramstein Air Force Base.  While in Germany he was afforded the opportunity of treating people from around the world as well as local civilian and military patients. His association and friendship with many international orthodontists also served to broaden his professional knowledge and skills.  These relationships continue today.  Here he also gained a wealth of experience treating patients whose cases he not only started but those who transferred to him from other orthodontists when their careers or military service brought them overseas.

Patients traveled to him from as far as Saudi Arabia, the Middle East, Romania, Holland, Belgium and Luxemburg. This experience of taking someone else’s patient and bringing them forward to a fabulous finish was invaluable in increasing his already large wealth of experience.  Dr. Cox was among a select group of Orthodontists licensed to operate a private practice in Germany. Due in part to these experiences and a sense of duty, he is one of the few Orthodontists in Eastern North Carolina that routinely accepts transfer patients.

After eight years in Germany Dr. Cox returned home to Greenville to practice and be near his family. He is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, North Carolina Association of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, North Carolina Dental Society and East Central Dental Society. He also teaches as a preceptor at the East Carolina University School of Medicine’s Family Practice Dental Clinic where he oversees the integration of simple orthodontics into the Dental Residency program there.

Possessing a great sense of humor, Dr. Cox is adored by all his patients. They relax and enjoy an unhurried, caring professional atmosphere. He credits his excellent results to his attention to detail, sense of responsibility and ‘hands on’ practice.  He is also known as well for the amazing office decor of collectibles and memorabilia he has amassed over the years.  His office has been highlighted by WITN’S Country Rover and is even utilized as a teaching resource for some history classes in Pitt County.

bracieDr. Cox and his wife Ilene enjoy antiquing, the beach and supporting various community organizations including Smiles & Frowns Playhouse where he served as cast photographer for 15 years.

Their philanthropy extends to causes outside the area including the USO, The World War II Memorial, the American Air Museum in England and their most favorite, The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in Virginia (www.history.org).  Their daughter Kathryn is an orthodontic assistant for a private practice in New York City and their best dog, Bracie, still lives at home!

Happy Bracie is our office mascot!

Treatment

Why Braces?

Quite simply, braces work. For people with crooked or misaligned teeth, braces provide gentle pressure to the teeth in order to give them a straighter appearance. This not only leads to a more beautiful smile, but can give you more self-confidence about the way you look.

Crooked, crowded teeth are hard to clean and can result in tooth decay, gum disease or lead to tooth loss.  Other problems include abnormal wear of tooth surfaces and poor chewing function.

Untreated orthodontic problems often lead to more expensive dental procedures that could have been avoided. Dr. Cox and your general dentist want you to have the benefits of healthy teeth and proper jaw alignment.

For most people a beautiful smile is the most obvious benefit of orthodontics.  Improved self confidence and long term dental health are also direct results of your treatment.

Invisalign, Braces, Retainers, Oh My!!

ARE YOU A CANDIDATE FOR ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT?
We believe that knowledge is power and informed patients make the best decisions for themselves.  We strive to include our patients as active participants in their orthodontic experience.

Adults

adult_orthoOne of every five patients in orthodontic treatment is over 21. Most adult cases can be treated in a straight forward fashion. Some adults, however, may require Dr. Cox to develop a treatment plan which includes their general dentist and/or periodontist as part of their process. Every patient is different.  New techniques and appliances afford several options of treatment.  Some adults only need appliances or traditional metal and clear braces, chosen by Dr. Cox for their comfort, performance and aesthetics while others are candidates for Invisalign treatment.  Invisalign, a popular alternative, is a series of clear retainers that move your teeth step by step to their straight finish!

While some dentists only use case development provided by Invisalign technicians to prepare your treatment, Dr. Cox uses Invisalign technology plus his orthodontic training and experience to design your personalized treatment himself.

Our adult patients agree that it’s never too late to improve their greatest asset – their smile.

Stages of Treatment for Teens and Children

smile4There can be two or more stages of orthodontic treatment. Most patients will benefit from an active, corrective stage followed by retention. Some children will benefit from two treatment stages which would include an early treatment we call Phase One.  The goals of each stage should be discussed with the doctor to best understand any limitations of treatment.

Children

Children should see an Orthodontist by age 7 according to the American Association of Orthodontists. Timely screening increases the chances for an incredible smile!  By this age, the adult first molars have normally erupted, allowing Dr. Cox to evaluate tooth relationships and esthetic concerns. An orthodontist is trained to determine when and if treatment is required and the best time for that to begin.

If a Phase One Treatment is indicated it means your child will benefit from it in a substantial way enabling Dr. Cox to guide the growth of the jaw and incoming permanent teeth. Early treatment can also regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches, gain space for permanent teeth, avoid  the need for permanent tooth extractions, reduce likelihood of impacted permanent teeth, correct thumb-sucking, and eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems. In other words, early treatment can simplify later treatment.  Interceptive, or early treatment procedures, may take as few as six months or last as long as 18 months.

Teens

paa367000037Today’s young patients have an amazing choice of exciting options to make their orthodontic experience fun. Colored elastics which define their personalities, retainer designs to set their moods or Invisalign for teens so they can keep their transformation secret! Wires are also less noticeable than they used to be and the latest materials move teeth faster with less discomfort to patients. Whatever we offer at our office, our young teens find a way to express themselves through their treatment. Orthodontics is now teen friendly.

Orthodontic appliances are either removable or brackets bonded to the teeth. By placing a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, braces slowly move teeth to a corrected position.

Our Office

New Patient Visit

At your Complimentary First Visit Dr. Cox will examine the patient and explain the problems that exist. Usually the determination can be made as to the type of treatment, when it should begin, estimated length of treatment and approximate cost.  Patients who are not yet ready for orthodontics are placed on RECALL and they are periodically seen for observation. These visits, which are free to the patient, are generally scheduled on three, six, nine, or twelve month intervals.

Records and Consult

black_familyIf a patient is ready to start treatment many decide to have their orthodontic RECORDS taken at their first appointment.  In depth exams, impressions and x-rays allow Dr. Cox to develop a personal plan of treatment.  After reviewing the records, Dr. Cox is able to CONSULT with you and discuss your treatment in detail.

Appointments

smile12When treatment starts the first appointment will usually take from one to two hours of your time.  During active treatment, visits are scheduled most often at three to six week intervals, depending on the nature of the treatment that is taking place.  Invisalign appointments range from six to eight week intervals.  Most appointments generally last about 20 minutes. An appointment that requires more time will be booked for a morning or early afternoon visit. This allows Dr. Cox adequate time to make all necessary adjustments.

We make every effort to be on time for our patients and ask that you extend the same courtesy to us. If you cannot keep an appointment please notify us immediately.  Cancel only if it is an emergency and provide us with 24 hour notice at minimum.

Payment and Office Policies

Our Orthodontic Treatment Coordinator will work with you on the cost and payment options of your treatment. We strive to make orthodontics affordable for all our patients.

Fees

The cost of treatment depends on the severity of the patient’s problem.  We have payment plans to suit different budgets and we file the necessary papers if you have insurance coverage.

In an effort to keep orthodontic fees down while maintaining the highest level of professional care, we have established this financial policy:

If full payment is made at the onset of treatment, we will offer a fee discount. If you have insurance, we will offer a discount for payment of your portion of the fee that will not be covered by insurance.

To fit your individual needs, financial arrangements are made to extend your payments over a period of months at no interest when paid on time.

For your convenience, we accept payment by VISA and MASTERCARD.

In cases of serious delinquency, treatment will be discontinued, although we will make every effort to accommodate patients with temporary difficulties.

Insurance

Great news….we’re insurance friendly!  If you have insurance, we will contact the company to determine the coverage you have available. Our office understands how complicated insurance can be and we try to make it easy for you by providing our expertise in dealing with them.  We also make every effort to work on your behalf with the company if there is a problem.  In the majority of cases our office will accept assignment from your carrier.  If for some reason, however, your insurance benefits end during treatment, you will then be responsible for those payments.

Our office is a premiere DELTA DENTAL provider.
